To get an idea of what it was like living in a 19th century Ontario village, then this is as close as it gets. A
visit to the Black Creek Pioneer Village really makes for a lovely family day out, with a bit of a difference.
The Black Creek is centered around the Strong family and their farm. Their first log house, smokehouse and
barn were built in 1816 and 1825, and a second clapboard home built in 1832.
The authenticity is so
genuine, that even the animals used (sheep and hogs) are English imports which were used by the pioneers.
The village boasts 30 mid-19th-century buildings bordered by pathways and boardwalks. When visiting the
village, you can't help slipping into the more relaxed and slower pace of life. Horse and cart is the mode of
transport here, so the pollution and frenzy of automobiles doesn't exist.
The Laskay Emporium store sells
seeds for farming and various other essentials including handcrafted brooms and old-fashioned candy. Fresh
loaves are baked in the old hearth oven at the Half Way House, a stagecoach tavern. Moving along, a cooper
constructs watertight barrels and pails in the traditional manner, which involves no nails. The skill and
knowledge of these talented people is very clear to see.
Other workers conducting their daily activities are
cabinetmakers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, weaving, clockmakers and printers. There is also a single-roomed
schoolhouse and beautiful gardens. If you are in the area, make sure not to miss out on this wonderful trip
back through time.
