City Hall, Toronto

Located at Queen Street West, City Hall is renowned for its futuristic and striking design. It all began when the Mayor Nathan Phillips asked the City Council to hold a competition for the best city hall design. To their surprise and joy, they received over 500 entries from 42 different countries. The winner was a Finnish architect called Viljo Revell, and his building opened in1965. Community entertainment takes place on the square to the front of the City Hall while the pool where workers have their lunch during the good weather, acts as a skating rink in the winter.

The peace garden to the east houses an eternal flame which was lit by Pope John Paul II, using a flame from the Memorial for Peace at Hiroshima. Henry Moore's fabulous sculpture, Three Way Piece Number Two, or The Archer as the locals prefer to call it, lies at the entrance of the hall. City Hall itself is well known for its various art works, including the mural Metropolis, by local artist David Partridge. This unusual work was created from over 100,000 nails, and is certainly worth a look. The Golden Book, which lies in the Hall of Memory, contains the names of the Torontonians who died in World War II.

A large white column in the center of this room, supports the Council Chamber above. A beautiful copper and glass mosaic named Views to the City, lines the north corridor. Here you can take an elevator up to the Council chamber, which is open to the general public unless there is a private meeting in progress.
