The Toronto Islands

Only a 20-minute ferry ride away from the bustling city of Toronto lies this beautiful and peaceful place, which is full of lazy waterways, cycle paths and bucolic lanes. There are 14 islands in total, covering an area of 600 acres, and these originated from a peninsula which was broken up by a ferocious storm in 1858. Up until about 1920, the islands were sprinkled with fine hotels which resulted in a degree of commercialism.

Today however, visitors come to find peace and tranquility with walking, biking, playing tennis, picnicking, feeding the ducks, relaxing on the beach or boating. There are public swimming areas on Centre and Ward's Island and a nude beach on Hanlan's Point. Be sure to look out for pollution signs. The main islands are Centre, Ward's and Algonquin, with the first being the busiest. It boasts Centreville, an old-fashioned amusement park with a fantastic 1890s carousel, a flume ride, antique cars and a small working farm where kids can ride the ponies and stroke the lambs.

A 45-minute walk from here takes you to either Hanlan's Point or Ward's Island from which you can catch a return ferry. You can cross the lagoon from Ward's Island to Algonquin Island, which boasts a stunning view of the city skyline. Generally speaking, the best way to make the most of your trip is to rent a bicycle once you get off the ferry.
