The Casa Loma is a wonderful mixture and blend of 17th-century Scottish baronial and 20th Century Fox. It
was built between 1911 and 1914 by Sir Henry Pellatt, and was to be his fantasy home. Its magnificent
Elizabethan chimneys, Rhenish turrets, secret passageways and underground tunnels, gave it an abundance
of character. No expense was spared on his magnificent project. He imported Scottish stonemasons and
Italian woodcarvers and spent an incredible $1.5million furnishing the 98 rooms. The result was awesome.
Some of the features include a hammerbeam ceiling in the massive Grand Hall; splendid paneling in the Oak
Room, which took three artisans three full years to complete; bronze doors leading into the luxurious,
stained-glass domed conservatory. Some of the luxuries that were added to the mansion include a marble
swimming pool; an elevator; a private telephone system; a 10,000-volume library; 15 baths and over 5,000
electric lights. Even the horses in the stables live in absolute luxury, with each of their names set in 18-carat
gold at the head of each stall. The stables themselves contain beautiful Spanish tiling and top quality
mahogany.
Pellatt himself amassed huge wealth while in his 20s, and founded Toronto's first hydroelectric power
company. However, all turned sour when in 1920, it was ruled that electric power was a public utility. His
money evaporated, and he died in 1939, a poverty stricken man.
